How to play Facebook video sound in the background

Facebook pauses a video the second you leave the app or lock the phone. There is no background-audio setting to turn on: the app has no audio-only mode, and minimising it stops the sound.

Why Facebook stops when you leave

A video in the Facebook app is a video, not a track. When you switch apps or press the power button, the operating system suspends the player and the sound goes with it, because nothing has told the phone that something is meant to keep playing.

Music apps avoid that by registering a media session, which is what puts the artwork and the play button on your lock screen. Facebook does not do that for feed video, so there is no setting anywhere that will keep a reel talking while you read something else.

Picture-in-picture is the closest the app gets, and it is still a video: it keeps a small window on screen, uses the battery to decode pictures you are not looking at, and stops the moment you lock the phone.

What you get once a sound is saved

Each saved sound goes into a stack, which behaves like a playlist: it plays through in order, repeats one track or the whole stack, shuffles, and moves on when one ends, all with the screen off. Bluetooth and wired headset buttons work, because the player registers with the operating system's media session the way a music app does.

Saving is local by default. Nothing needs an account, nothing is posted to Facebook, and a stack stays private until you choose to share it. Signing in — with Google, or a link sent to your email — is only for keeping the same stacks on more than one device.

Facebook videos are often long: a ten-minute clip becomes a ten-minute track, and repeat works on it the same as on a fifteen-second reel.

What it cannot do

It only works with public videos. Anything limited to friends, to a private group, or taken down cannot be read, and neither can a live stream while it is still live.

It is not a downloader: the audio plays from LoopRush rather than landing in your phone's files, and the video itself stays on Facebook, one tap away when you want to watch it.

It never signs in to Facebook as you. Nothing is posted, liked or followed on your behalf, and LoopRush never asks for a Facebook password.
