Play Instagram Reels in the background on Android

Android pauses Instagram's video when the app leaves the foreground, and Instagram does not run a background audio service, so a reel's sound stops the moment you switch apps or press the power button. There is no setting for it.

A web page in Chrome can keep audio playing in the background. Paste the reel link into LoopRush and the sound plays on its own, with play, pause and skip in the notification shade and on the lock screen. Install it once and you can send reels to it straight from Instagram's share sheet.

Works with TikTok links and Instagram Reels links. LoopRush plays the sound on its own; the video is one tap away when you want it.

Step by step in Chrome

  1. In Instagram, open the reel, tap the share arrow, then Copy link.
  2. Open looprush2.com in Chrome and paste the link.
  3. The sound extracts in a few seconds and starts playing.
  4. Press the power button or switch apps. Playback continues, and the notification shade shows play, pause and skip.

Send a reel straight from Instagram's share sheet

Android lets an installed web app register as a share target, which removes the copy-and-paste step. Open looprush2.com in Chrome, use the menu and choose Install app or Add to Home screen, and LoopRush appears in the Android share sheet from then on.

After that, tap the share arrow on any reel, pick LoopRush, and the sound is saved and starts playing without touching the address bar. Android shares Chrome's storage with the installed app, so anything you saved before is still there.

Controls, headphones and the lock screen

Once a reel's sound is playing, Android treats it as normal media. The notification shade and lock screen show the track with transport buttons, and wired or Bluetooth headset buttons map to play, pause, next and previous.

A stack keeps going on its own: when one sound ends the next starts, and repeat and shuffle both work with the screen off, so a set of reels runs like a playlist without unlocking the phone.

Which reel links work, and what it does not do

instagram.com/reel/… links, instagram.com/p/… video posts and the instagram.com/share/reel/… links all work; stories and profiles are not reels. Reels from private accounts cannot be read.

It is not a downloader. No MP3 lands in your Downloads folder; the audio plays from LoopRush and the reel stays on Instagram, one tap away.

Questions

How do I play an Instagram Reel in the background on Android?
Copy the reel's link in Instagram, open looprush2.com in Chrome and paste it. The sound plays on its own and keeps going when you switch apps or lock the phone, with controls in the notification shade.
Can I send a reel straight to it from the share sheet?
Yes. Install LoopRush from Chrome's menu and it registers as an Android share target, so Share then LoopRush saves the sound with no copying.
Does Instagram have background play on Android?
No. Reels stop when the app leaves the foreground or the screen locks, and there is no setting that changes it.
Do the headset buttons work?
Yes. Play, pause, next and previous work from wired and Bluetooth headsets and from the lock screen.
Can I play a reel from a private account?
No. Instagram does not hand over reels that need a login to see.
Can I do the same with TikTok?
Yes, paste a TikTok link the same way, or share it from TikTok's share sheet once LoopRush is installed. There is a separate guide for TikTok on Android.
