Play Instagram Reels in the background on iPhone

iOS suspends Instagram's video as soon as you swipe away or lock the phone, and Instagram never opens a background audio session, so a reel's sound stops with it. No setting in Instagram or iOS changes that.

Safari can keep an audio session open in the background, so the fix is to let a web page own the reel's sound. Paste the reel link into LoopRush in Safari and it plays the audio on its own — through the lock screen, Control Centre and your AirPods — with nothing to install.

Works with TikTok links and Instagram Reels links. LoopRush plays the sound on its own; the video is one tap away when you want it.

Step by step in Safari

  1. In Instagram, open the reel, tap the share arrow (the paper plane), then Copy link.
  2. Open looprush2.com in Safari.
  3. Paste the link into the box and tap Play it.
  4. The sound extracts in a few seconds and starts playing.
  5. Lock the iPhone. The audio continues, and the lock screen shows the reel's title, cover and play, pause and skip.

Where the controls appear on iOS

Once the sound is playing, iOS treats it like any other media. The lock screen and Control Centre show the track with transport buttons, and the buttons on wired headphones or AirPods play, pause and skip. That is the MediaSession API, which Safari supports and Instagram's in-app player does not expose.

Playback survives switching apps, so you can go back into Instagram and keep scrolling reels while the saved sound plays underneath.

Why there is no Instagram share-sheet option on iPhone

On Android an installed web app can appear in the system share sheet, so a reel can be sent straight to it. iOS does not offer that to web apps, which is why the iPhone flow is copy the link, then paste. It is one extra tap and the only real difference between the platforms.

If you add LoopRush to your Home Screen, sign in first — Google, or a link sent to your email. iOS gives a Home Screen web app its own storage, so reels saved in Safari as a guest do not appear inside the installed app unless they are attached to an account.

Which reel links work

instagram.com/reel/… links, instagram.com/p/… links to video posts, and the instagram.com/share/reel/… links the app sometimes copies all work. Stories and profile links are not reels and the box says so at once. Reels from private accounts cannot be read: Instagram will not hand them over without a login.

It is not a downloader. Nothing lands in Files or the camera roll; the sound plays from LoopRush and the reel stays on Instagram, one tap away.

Questions

How do I play an Instagram Reel in the background on iPhone?
Copy the reel's link in Instagram, open looprush2.com in Safari and paste it. The sound plays on its own; lock the iPhone or switch apps and it keeps going, with controls on the lock screen and in Control Centre.
Does Instagram have background play on iPhone?
No. Reels pause as soon as the app goes to the background or the screen locks on iOS, and there is no setting that changes it.
Do I need an app from the App Store?
No. It runs in Safari. Adding it to the Home Screen is optional and only changes how it launches.
Do the AirPods and lock-screen buttons work?
Yes. Play, pause and skip work from the lock screen, Control Centre and headphone controls, because the page registers a media session with iOS.
Can I play a reel from a private account?
No. Instagram does not hand over reels that need a login to see.
Can I do the same with TikTok?
Yes, paste a TikTok link the same way. There is a separate guide for TikTok on iPhone.
